for a Crusade or
“Holy War” to
regain the Holy
Land (Jerusalem)
from the Muslim
Turks
“God himself would lead them, for they
would be doing His work. There will be
absolution and remission of sins for all
who die in the service of Christ. Here
they are poor and miserable sinners;
there they will be rich and happy. Let
none hesitate; they must march next
summer. God wills it!”
1. Next 200 years, many Crusades were
launched in an attempt to recover
Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks
2. 1096 – approximately 50,000-60,000 knights

A. If a knight died in battle they were assured
a place in heaven

surrounded Jerusalem.
They fought for a month
and finally took the city.

5. Crusades continued with decreasing
success.

(land and money) than religion
