as anger, fear, and
pity to convince.
Logical Appeals
Logical Appeals use
common sense and
reasoning – sometimes
false logic - to convince
others.
This poster argued that
the care of each
"undesirable" cost the
"undue burden" of
60,000 marks of
German taxpayer
money over the
patient's lifetime, and
that there was a better
- indeed, a "final" solution to the difficulty.
Ethical Appeals
Ethical appeals
use people’s
moral attitudes
about right and
wrong, good and
evil, in order to
convince.
Sarcasm
Sarcasm – witty language used to
convey insults or scorn.
Anecdotes
Anecdote – a
short account of
an incident.
Anecdotes are
used as examples
to support an
opinion, or as
stories that
appeal to our
emotions.
Expert Opinion
Expert Opinion – using quotes from
knowledgeable sources for support.
Allusion
A hint at something that most people
are familiar with.
For example, this
picture alludes to
Adam & Eve’s
apple.
Repetition
To repeat a
word
or phrase for
emphasis.
Case Studies
Case Study – a careful study of an individual
or group situation that reveals what factors
led to a particular success or failure.
