Dystopia
1984 is described as a dystopian novel,
presenting a view of the future that is
completely awful.
• What other examples can you think of in film,
music, or literature that present a dystopian
world? Describe.
• What purpose does this genre serve?
Our own society, while not a dystopia, is far
from perfect.
• What, in your mind, are the biggest problems
our society/world faces today?
• What changes would need to be made to solve
these problems?
Revolution
• Revolutions may occur very quickly, but the
successful revolutions are those movements that
take extra steps to ensure that the changes made
remain permanent. For example, some revolutions
use military coercion to keep the changes
permanent; others resort to “educational reforms”
and/or “social reforms.” Consider some of the
revolutions that you may have studied that put in
place long-lasting changes (e.g. the Bolshevik
Revolution, the Third Reich). Think about some of
the measures each revolution’s power structure took
to keep its cause from being overrun.
• Are revolutions doomed to betray themselves?
