Cities where to go
1595 functional urban areas
in Europe 29.
Assessed according to 6
topics: Population, Transport,
Industry, Knowledge,
Decision and Administration.
Core-periphery pattern.
Territorial capital(s) to look out for
•
The drivers of economic development and success are
traditionally seen as economic diversity / specialisation,
accessibility / connectivity and human capital
•
Clusters are a core aspect of more recent location theories,
which emphasis synergy, a creative milieu, innovation and
quality of life and urban environment for attracting highly
skilled labour
•
Governance-oriented theories focus on aspects such as
visions, inclusions and implementation capabilities
Global airports
2002
European multimodal accessibility
(road, rail, air), 2001
European and national
core-periphery pattern
dominate the European
accessibility.
Metropolitan regions with
international airports
show generally higher
accessibility.
Change of GDP per capita when implementing TEN/TINA
and higher transport costs, 2001-2021
A realisation of all
TEN/TINA projects and
transport pricing will
benefit in particular
regions in the ”new
Member States” and
Sicilly.
Information society readiness, growth and impact, 2003
Some regions in the Northern
countries, along with the core
of Europe are furthest ahead
in terms of ICT.
Generally urban areas are
better situated than rural
areas.
Functional profiles of metropolitan areas
Functional profiles matter as
comparative advantages and
for cooperation.
Only four areas are of
international significance
with regard to all 6 functions
considered.
The core is enlarging.
Research & Development
Business Enterprise Sector
Stronges metropolitan
areas often in areas with
strong R&D profile.
Highest level of R&D
expenditure in a country
normally in the capital
region (e.g. Athiani,
Budapest, Helsinki, Lisbon,
Paris, Praha and Wien).
Cultural employment 2005
(as share of local active population)
Share of cultural and creative
workers follow mainly national
patterns.
Finland, Sweden, Netherlands,
or Switzerland in the top.
Regional variations are mainly
related to the urban structure
(e.g. Bratislava, Budapest,
Madrid, Paris, Praha or Wien)
Components of population development
Aggregated natural and technological hazards
Qualitative measurements of governance levels
in urban and territorial policies
Economic Lisbon indicators
7 out of 14 official Lisbon
Short List indicators are
available at regional level.
Northern and central parts
generally in a better position
than southern and eastern.
In some countries urban areas
stand out strongly.
(1) GDP/capita, (2) GDP/employed person,
(3) employment rate, (4) Employment rate of older
workers, (5) gross domestic expenditure on R&D,
(6) Dispersion of regional (un)employment rates, and
(7) Long-term unemployment rate.
Food for thought
- The European core is spreading
- There are some strong urban areas outside the
European core
- The functional profile of cities is decisive for their supranational importance
- Accessible urban areas show the best Lisbon
performance
- ICT accessibility, cultural employment and R&D shows
urban-rural but also North-South and East-West
disparities
- Some developments may challenge the current picture,
e.g. demographic change and natural and technological
hazards.
