• Starts in Italy? Why?

– Venice

The Renaissance
• Period that lasts from 1350-1600
• Begins in city states of Italy
– Italy remained close to classics
– Center for trade, remained
wealthy
– Remained close to Byzantine(not
totally dark).
Humanism
New secular intellectual movement –
focus on Latin, Greek and humanities
- Private tutors for rich
Individualism and human improvement
were main ideas.

A rulers guidebook, discusses ways to hang on to power.
Lie, cheat, steal- anything to stay in power
Florence
• Center of trade- after Crusades a
flood of luxury goods are sent
here…. City grows wealthy.
• De Medici- a wealthy banking
family patron of the arts
Rome
• Center of Church, very
wealthy. Rebuilding of
ancient city.
• St. Peter’s Basilica
Architecture (Southern)
• Returned to ideals of Greece and Rome.
• Architects became as famous as artists.
• Brunelleshci- advanced dome technology…. Larger
domes -Studied Roman arches.

The Northern Renaissance
• Ideas from Italy moved north to
France, the “low countries”
Germany, and England.
Johannes Gutenberg
• Printing Press 1455
• Helps in the spread of knowledge
– More books available
– Printing in vernacular
– More people have access to information, begin to question
large institutions
• Church- leads to reformation
• State- leads to civil war and eventual revolution
Eventually led to the 1st novel . . .
