Interactive Notebook)
Why is food essential to your survival?
 Provides nutrients- the raw materials your body
needs to grow and repair
 Provides energy
Essential Nutrients
(Please start your notes on the right page)
Carbohydrates
 Molecules of Carbon, Hydrogen & Oxygen
 Simple carbs = sugars
 Complex carbs = chain of sugar molecules
that need to be broken down
 Fiber = complex carb that your body cannot
break down
Fats
 Molecules of C, H & O
 Dense energy > twice carb energy
 Part of cell membrane
 Saturated Fats = solid at room
temp.
 Unsaturated Fats = liquid at room
temp.
 Trans Fats = vegetable oil with
hydrogen added
 Cholesterol = found in fats, made
by your liver
Proteins
 Made of long chains of amino acids
 Needed to build tissue (growth and repair)
 Complete Protein = from animals
 Incomplete Protein = from plants, missing
essential amino acid(s)
Vitamins, Minerals, Water:
all needed for chemical reactions
Vitamins
 Need only small amounts
 Fat-Soluble =
dissolves in fat
 Water-Soluble =
dissolves in water
Minerals
 Not made by living things
Water
 Also helps transport substances, regulate
temperature and remove wastes
