Provides energy
Essential Nutrients
(Please start your notes on the right page)
Carbohydrates
Molecules of Carbon, Hydrogen & Oxygen
Simple carbs = sugars
Complex carbs = chain of sugar molecules
that need to be broken down
Fiber = complex carb that your body cannot
break down
Fats
Molecules of C, H & O
Dense energy > twice carb energy
Part of cell membrane
Saturated Fats = solid at room
temp.
Unsaturated Fats = liquid at room
temp.
Trans Fats = vegetable oil with
hydrogen added
Cholesterol = found in fats, made
by your liver
Proteins
Made of long chains of amino acids
Needed to build tissue (growth and repair)
Complete Protein = from animals
Incomplete Protein = from plants, missing
essential amino acid(s)
Vitamins, Minerals, Water:
all needed for chemical reactions
Vitamins
Need only small amounts
Fat-Soluble =
dissolves in fat
Water-Soluble =
dissolves in water
Minerals
Not made by living things
Water
Also helps transport substances, regulate
temperature and remove wastes
