AIM:
What NUTRIENTS do our
bodies need to function
properly?
What is the difference between
Organic and inorganic substances?
• Organic substances contain two key
elements: Carbon (C) and Hydrogen
(H).
• Must contain both carbon and
hydrogen in order to be considered
organic.
• Important organic compounds include:
• Carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.
What is the difference between
organic and inorganic substances?
• Inorganic substances DO NOT
contain BOTH carbon and hydrogen.
• Can contain EITHER carbon OR
hydrogen but not both.
• Important Inorganic substances
include:
• Water, Vitamins and Minerals.
What are the six main nutrients?
1. Carbohydrates
2. Proteins
3. Fats
4. Water
5. Vitamins
6. Minerals
1. Carbohydrates
Function – body’s #1 source of energy
Building blocks – glucose (C6H12O6)
Food sources – bread, pasta, fruit,
grain, vegetables
2. Proteins
Function – build and maintain body
tissue
Building blocks – amino acids
Food sources – meats, dairy, beans,
nuts
3. Fats
Function – #2 source of energy –
provide warmth, make cell
membranes
Building blocks – fatty acids &
glycerol
Food sources- oils, meats
What are saturated
and unsaturated fats?
• Saturated fats are solid at
room temperature.
• Unsaturated fats are liquid at
room temperature.
What is cholesterol?
• A type of fat which can line
arteries and cause blockages
in the blood vessels.
4. Water
• Makes up 70% of the body,
dissolve nutrients and carry
materials in the blood
5. Vitamins
• Aid in proper body functions
6. Minerals
• aid in body functioning and
proper growth and
development of bones and
teeth
How Can I Remember all My
Nutrients?
• It’s Simple… Just remember this…
• Please Wash My Very Filthy Car.
What is a deficiency disease?
-Disease caused by the lack of a
