What was life like for the Crusaders?
A Crusade is a holy war - a war for a religious
or moral purpose or aim.
The aim of the Crusades was for Christians to
regain control of the Holy Land.
The Holy Land was holy to both Muslims and
Christians
In 1076 Muslims captured it and stopped
Christians from going on pilgrimage there.
By 1095 the Pope was calling for a Crusade to
win it back!

After engagements
with the Turks the
Crusaders would
return to camp with the
heads of Moslems
mounted on spears.
On one occasion they
even had Moslem
prisoners of war carry
the heads of slain
colleagues
themselves. 50 miles
south of Antioch, when
they captured the town
of Marrat, the
Crusaders even
resorted to
cannibalism.
Frankish chronicler Radulph of Caen,
observed. "Our troops boiled pagan
adults in cooking pots. They
impaled children on spits and
devoured them grilled."
