The Crusades
• A series of Holy Wars
• Emperor Alexuis I asks Pope Urban III for help
• Started when Muslim Turks attack the Holy Land
• Many ordinary people were motivated by riches.
The Crusades
• They took back Holy land in 1099
• Wars went on and off for 200 years
• Conquered land divided into 4 small states
Who won the Wars?
• 1st Crusade- Christians
• 2nd – 9th Crusade-Muslims
Children’s Crusade
• In 1212 two groups joined the Crusades
-From France and Germany
-Mostly made up of Children
• It didn’t end very well
The Impact
• Expanded the European Economy
• Crusaders brought back Byzantine goods like
-Fabrics
-Spices
- Perfumes
• Fleets turned into trade ships
