Religious Wars
The Elizabethan era of the
Renaissance was from 1558 and
lasted until 1603.
Crusades continued…
• The Christian Europe decided to band
together against the Ottoman menace.
The Christians met the Ottomans and their
Muslim allies off the coast of Greece in
1571. The fight was called the Battle of
Lepanto. It was a naval battle.
Crusades
• The Crusades started in the 11th century.
However, the last Crusade occurred in the
Renaissance. It was an attempt by
Christian Europeans to win the Middle
East from the native Muslims.
Outcome
• The Christians gained the advantage.
They hardened Muslim attitudes against
Christians. Also, doubts were raised
among Christians about God’s will, the
churches authority, and the role of papacy.
This battle is often considered the last of
the Crusades.
