New School Rules!!!
How should AJHS be run?
What new set of rules are better?
New Rules #1
• No mixed gender classes; all boys classes and all girls
classes.
• There will be no visitors allowed.
• There is no punishment if you sneak out of the class
without the teacher knowing.
• There will be mostly P.E. classes throughout the day
and less “real” classes.
• There are no individual grades; you make grades as a
group.
• It is a very elite school now, so if you are not serious,
you will be kicked out.
New Rules #2
• In class, there will be a lot of discussion and sharing
opinions. We will learn about the enemies of the
United States, as well as our allies.
• To assess students, you can take tests however you
want (oral, written, acting it out, whatever you want to
do!!)
• More value is placed in science, math, philosophy,
music and theater.
• The teachers move classrooms, and classes are mixed
gender.
• You are evaluated at the end of every year, and if you
are behind, you get individual tutor.

So why did we talk about this?
• When looking at these
sets of rules, they mirror
rules from certain Greek
city-states.
• Rules #1 were like
SPARTA and Rules #2
were like ATHENS.
• These are the two most
important city-states in
Ancient Greece.
Who’s Athens and who’s
Sparta?
Sparta
• Sparta was located on the
Peloponnesus and was
made up of Dorian
Greeks conquered
Laconia.
• Known to be laconicmeaning: of courage,
self sacrifice, devoted to
the state, unaffected by
material things,
simplistic, silent, and
dedicated.

Sparta
• Sparta was a militaristic state,
focusing primarily on the military.
• There was an oligarchic government
system, but it was never of major
concern. As long as the army was
strong.
Sparta Continued…
• Women were not part of the army, but were
trained to be fighters. They felt that the better
the bodies-the better the babies.
• Spartan male was a soldier his entire adult life
and began military school/camp at the age of 7.
• Everything was for the duty of the state-even
marriage…
• Feared totalitarianism…so they had 2 kings and
a legislative body.
Sparta continued…
• Concept on life was to “live simply”
• Important aspect of their society: Helots-state
owned slaves that were previously conquered
peoples. These land workers were strictly
controlled and made the Spartan Society
complete.
• The Spartans did not allow visitors into their
city. They were always suspicious and therefore,
isolated themselves. They just wanted to be left
alone. They were content with their Spartan
way of life-uninterrupted!
Athens
• Athenians believed in
individuality. They always strived
for excellence and encouraged
others to do so.
• People were still soldiers and
athletes, but they were
philosophers and artists as well.
The Athenian culture prided itself
on being open to the “arts”.

• Athenians only had to serve in the
army for two years.

Athens continued…
• Government=monarchy or aristocracy, but
eventually evolved into the first democracy-in
which became their “pride and joy”
• Mycenaean peoples
• Characterized by self-consciousness-They
thought themselves to be the only “real Greeks”
and therefore-superior.
– Saw everyone not truly Greek as barbarian
– Clearly a strong self-image
Athens continued…
• Prided themselves on their naval powers
and their “open door” policy to other
cultures and ideas
• Felt their culture was so great that it must
be shared…
