Fourth Nine Weeks Curriculum Plan

Second Grade
Reading/Oral Language/Writing
2.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of oral language structure.
2.2 The student will continue to expand listening and speaking vocabularies.
2.3 The student will use oral communication skills.
2.4 The student will use phonetic strategies when reading and spelling.
2.5 The student will use meaning clues and language structure when reading.
2.6 The student will use language structure to expand vocabulary when reading.
2.7 The student will read fiction and nonfiction, using a variety of strategies
independently.
2.8 The student will read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction.
2.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of information in reference
materials.
2.10 The student will maintain and improve manuscript handwriting and begin to
make the transition to cursive.
2.11 The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations.
2.12 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation,
and spelling.
Math
Continuation and development of skills taught during the third quarter.
New Skills:
2.12 Estimate and find linear measurements using a ruler (to the nearest centimeter and
inch, including perimeter of a polygon).
2.13 Estimate and count the number of square units to determine the area of a polygon.
2.14 Estimate and count the number of cubes in a rectangular box to determine volume.
2.15 Estimate and calculate the weight/mass of familiar objects in pounds and/or
kilograms using a scale.
2.17 Use actual measuring devices to compare metric and customary units for measuring
liquid volume (cups, pints, quarts, gallons, and liters, using concepts of more, less, and
equivalent).
2.19 Read temperature on a Celsius and/or Fahrenheit thermometer to the nearest 10
degrees.
2.23 Probability and Statistics: Read, construct and interpret simple picture and bar
graphs.

Continuation and development of skills taught during the third quarter.
New Skills:
2.4 The student will investigate and understand that plants and animals undergo a series
of orderly changes in their life cycles. Plant Life Process: Understand that flowering
plants undergo many changes from the formation of the flower to the development of the
fruit. Life cycles of frogs and review of butterflies
2.7 Investigate and understand that weather and seasonal changes affect plants, animals,
and their surroundings. Key concepts include effects on growth and behavior of living
things (migration, hibernation, camouflage, adaptation, and dormancy) and the
weathering and erosion of the land surfaces.
2.8 Natural Resources, Conservation, and Recycling: Investigate and understand that
plants produce oxygen and food, are a source of useful products, and provide benefits in
nature. Earth Day (April 22).
2.1 The student will observe, conduct, and respond to scientific investigations, reasoning,
and logic.
