Two Types of Language
(Verbal)
--A system of (spoken) and
written words.
(Nonverbal)
--Communication without (words).
Instead communication is by (body)
language, appearance, and the sound of
voice.

for something else.

: Accepted by a large
number of people.
(Learned) : Learned through culture.
(Changing) : which is good & not good.

Denotation: A word’s (dictionary)
meaning
Example: Looking up the word “cat” in the
dictionary
Connotation: A word’s (hidden)
meaning
What it makes you (feel).
How you feel after hearing the words…rat,
handsome, paragraph
Adapting Language
(Standard American English)
Language that follows the rules and guidelines
found in grammar.
Widely used and accepted
(Sublanguage)
(Jargon)
: Specialized vocabulary
understood by people in a particular group.
(Slang)
: Consists of recently coined words
or old words used new ways.

: A regional or cultural variety of
language.
