What does exercise do to the lungs
and breathing?
answer
• Increases breathing rate (faster)
• Deeper breathing (deeper)
• Increases gas exchange in the lungs
What do you call the time taken for
your breathing rate and depth to
return to normal after exercise?
answer
Recovery time
What will a fit persons recovery time
be?
answer
Short

1. Tar in cigarette can cause
cancer
2. Smoking increases heart
disease
3. Pregnant – damage baby
4. Carbon monoxide reduces
blood’s ability to carry
oxygen

How can we maintain the size and
strength of our muscles?
answer
Regular
exercise
What is reaction time and how can it be
improved? What factors affect it?
answer
•The time taken to
respond to a
stimulus
•Improve it be
practicing
•Alcohol, drugs and
excitement affect it
How is alcohol carried around the body?
How does alcohol affect you in
a) short term b) long term
Carried around in the blood
answer
Short term: Slow reaction time, poor muscle
control, poor judgement
Long term: Liver problems and brain damage
Name The gas moving INTO

OXYGEN
Name the gas moving from the
blood into the alveoli
answer
Carbon dioxide
(CO2)
What changes take place during
inhalation – what happens when we
breathe in?
Ribs – up
and out
Diaphragm
Down
answer
The Diaphragm moves down,
the rib cage moves up and
out and the lungs fill with air
Is the function of the rings of
cartilage in the airways?
answer
To keep the air passages open
To prevent the air passages from
closing.
List the features of the lungs that
make them efficient organs of gas
exchange
answer
• Lots of alveoli
• Lots of blood vessels round
each alveolus
• Walls of the alveoli are very thin
• Alveoli are moist inside so oxygen can
dissolve in the moisture. This makes it
easier to then pass through.

What is the function of the
valves in the heart
Answer
Prevent back flow of blood
Keep the blood flowing in the
correct direction through the heart
Which side of the heart has thicker
muscle and Why?
answer
The left side as it has to pump
blood to all parts of the body
the right pumps blood only to
the lungs
Name the blood vessels labelled
Aorta
Pulmonary
Artery
answer
Name the type of blood vessels
shown.
answer
Vein
Where are capillaries found?
answer
At the body cells
Describe how the structure of
capillaries suit their function?
answer
They are only one cell thick so
substances can pass though into
the body cells (and waste from
the body cells back into the
blood)

Caring for your teeth
answer
•Regular brushing - Teeth can decay when bacteria in
the mouth produce plaque acids which dissolves the hard
enamel surface of the teeth.
Have regular check-ups - Visit your dentist at least
once a year.
Cut down on sugary snacks - Eating lots of sugar and
starch, plus acidic foods and drinks can cause tooth
decay. Bacteria in the mouth use bits of food to produce
plaque acid, which attack the teeth.
