Explain the Function of the
Respiratory System
To supply the blood with oxygen
in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to
all parts of the body
It is the system of the body that deals with
breathing

Explain gas exchange in the lungs
• Oxygen in the lungs diffuses through the
alveoli, through the capillary wall, and into
the blood
• Carbon dioxide in the blood diffuses
through the capillary wall and into the

What causes breathing?
What causes breathing?
• Inhalation
– Rib muscles contract to pull ribs up and out
– The DIAPHRAGM muscle contracts to pull
down the lungs
– Tissue expands to pull in air.
• Exhalation
– Rib muscles relax
– The Diaphragm muscle relaxes
– Tissue returns to resting position and pushes
air out.
