The Respiratory System
Chapter 8.1 (p. 206)
Function of the Respiratory
System
The primary function of the respiratory
system is to supply the blood with oxygen, in
order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all
parts of the body.
Respiration
Breathing and Respiration are NOT the same.
Breathing…
Movement of the chest that brings air in the lungs
and removes waste gasses.
Respiration…
glucose + oxygen = CO2 + H20 + energy
Breathing is the movement
of the chest that brings air
into the lungs and removes
waste gases.
Respiration is when your
cells use oxygen and
dissolved food to form
energy!
1) Pharynx—a tube-like passageway used
by food, liquid, and air.
2) Epiglottis—A flap of tissue that
separates air and food going down.
3) Larynx—the airway to which two pairs of
horizontal folds of tissue, called vocal cords
are attached.
4) Trachea—Long tube of thick cartilage
that brings air to the lungs
5) Bronchi—2 smaller tubes that lead
into the lungs and split off into smaller
and smaller tubes, such as bronchioles
and alveoli.
Organs of the Respiratory
System
The alveoli are the final branchings of the
respiratory tree and act as the primary gas
exchange units of the lung.
Its all about your diaphragm! Similar to a
squeezed bottle.
Your diaphragm is beneath your lungs and
contract/relaxes to move gases in an out!
What are hiccups?
An involuntary spasm of the diaphragm and
respiratory organs, with a sudden closure of
the glottis and a sound like a cough.
Respiratory Infections
Chronic Bronchitus
Emphysema
Lung Cancer
Asthma
Lung Capacity
The volume of both lungs combined or how
much air your lungs can hold.
Respiratory Rate
The number of breaths a living being, such as
a human, takes within a certain amount of
time (frequently given in breaths per minute).
Who do you think has a faster respiratory
rate?
