Respiratory System
 Respiratory System-set of organs that
supply your body with oxygen and rid your
body of carbon dioxide.
– Breathing in and out are the basic actions of the
respiratory system.
– The respiratory system is a non-voluntary
action.
 You don’t have to think about it to make it work.
Respiratory System
 Parts of the Respiratory System
– Mouth-passage for air to enter and exit the
body.
– Nose-other passage way for air.
 Cilia-tiny hair-like projections that trap dirt and
particles from the air. (filter)
– Epiglottis-flap of tissue in back of mouth that
covers the trachea, preventing food from
entering it.
Respiratory System
– Trachea-tube in the throat that takes air to and
from the lungs.
– Bronchi-two tubes that branch from the trachea
to each lung.
– Lungs-two large organs that exchange oxygen
and carbon dioxide.
– Diaphragm-muscle below lungs that expands
and relaxes to produce breathing.
How Breathing Works
 Inhaling
– Diaphragm moves down.
– Rib cage expands, making room in the chest.
– Air rushes into the body, to the lungs.
How Breathing Works
 Inside the lungs
– The bronchi divide into smaller passages called
bronchioles.
– Air passes through bronchioles into the alveoli
which are surrounded by capillaries.
– Oxygen moves into the bloodstream and carbon
dioxide from the blood enters the alveoli.
How Breathing Works
 Exhaling
– Diaphragm pushes up.
– Rib cage move in and down, forcing air out of
the lungs.
– Air with carbon dioxide move back through
bronchioles and bronchi, up the trachea and out
of the mouth and/or nose.

respiratory illness.
