Reformation – 1500’s movement to
change church practices

by Martin Luther.

like the corruption he saw
in the Catholic Church.
Indulgences
Luther
was against the sale of
Indulgences.
The idea that you could buy your way into
heaven.
Sins could be forgiven at a price.
The Church made a lot of money this way.
95 Theses
In 1517, he attacks the church in the
95 theses - statements of belief
It’s a list of
complaints against
the church.
He gets
excommunicated
The Pope
The
Pope at the time was Leo X (a Medici)
He was trying to rebuild St. Peter’s
Basilica in Rome so was selling
indulgences left and right.

Printing Press
While
in hiding Luther translated the Bible
into German so educated people could
read it.
In
1450 Johann Gutenberg invented the
moveable type printing press, lots of
Bibles were printed.
Protestants
Luther’s
followers are called Protestants

still support church - conflict causes
religious wars

1600, Protestantism spreads to
England, Scandinavia
