The Protestant Reformation
1. Role of the Roman Catholic Church
Roman Catholic Church had little competition for
many centuries.
People began to criticize the Church for some of its
practices.

5. Effects of Luther’s Protest
The Lutheran Church started around 1522.

Luther’s ideas were rejected by the Pope and
Holy Roman Emperor.
But his ideas were accepted by many others.
1529 - German princes who remained loyal
to the Pope agreed to join forces against
Luther’s ideas.
Other princes who supported Luther’s ideas
protested against this agreement.
Protestant = Christian that belongs to a nonCatholic church
6. Impact of the Printing Press
The weakening & corruption of the church
along with the development of the printing
press helped to spread the ideas of the
Protestant Reformation & Renaissance.
