• Became a hero of the revolution by defeating royalist
rebels in 1795
• Won many military victories and gained popularity
• Able to hide his defeats w/a network of spies and
censoring the press
• Helped overthrow the weak French Directory in a
coup d'état, named himself “consul for life” (French
leader)
• Held plebiscite votes to make people feel they had a
say in French gov.
• Kept many of the changes the French Rev. brought
about, but promoted order and stability
