• Senator Joseph McCarthy accused many
people of spies for the Soviet Union without
providing clear evidences.
• Background – communism as a threat to
liberty and capitalism.
• A “witch hunt” = a search for people
McCarthy blamed
Civil Rights movement
• 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of
Topeka
The U.S. Supreme Court decided that black
students should be allowed to attend the
same schools and universities as white
students, and this officially ended
“segregation.”
• 1957 The President Eisenhower sent troops
to Arkansas to defend the sovereignty of the
federal court. The soldiers’ duty was to
protect black children entering a previously
all white school.
• 1955 Rosa Park refused to vacate a seat for
a white person in the bus, and she was
arrested for violating Montgomery’s
transportation laws.
