War in the Pacific:
December 1941 - May 1942, time of unbroken
Japanese military victories
By late 1942 Japan had established great Empire
(as a result of more flexible politics)
Unlike the Nazis, the Japanese made negotiations
with local nationalists
In mid-1942, events take a different turn
United States gained superiority in Pacific
Huge advantage by cracking Japanese secret code
(Situation had been fluctuating since 1940)
In May 1943, Allies defeat the combined German and
Italian forces (the Battle of Tunisia)
Anglo-American forces land in Morocco and Algeria
In 1945, after the invasion of Berlin, Japan was issued
an unconditional surrender by the United States,
Great Britain and Soviet Union.
After ignoring the ultimatum, United States dropped
atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6
and August 9, 1945, killing more than 130, 000 civilians.
Japan surrendered instantly, ending the Second World
war
