Some Pearl Harbor
Statistics
8 battleships were sunk or damaged
13 other large ships were damaged
188 airplanes were destroyed
2403 were killed
1178 wounded
No aircraft carriers were damaged
Some good news
The aircraft carriers were the biggest
ships in the navy and had many planes
aboard – they were still ready to fight
The US people supported the war by
volunteering to serve or working in
factories.
GB and the SU were happy to have us
as an ally in their fight against Germany
The two sides in W W II
The Allies: GB, SU, and the USA.
Many other nations were also Allies (for
example: Canada, Australia, China,
Greece, etc…
The Axis powers were: Japan,
Germany and Italy.
Fronts in W W II
1. North Africa/Italy - US & GB vs. Germany
and Italy
2. The Pacific theater – US vs. Japan. Mostly
sea and air battles
3. Eastern Front (The Soviet Union) – SU vs.
Germany
4. Western Europe – US & GB vs. Germany
5. Atlantic ocean – US/GB vs. Germany
Important Questions?
Which enemy is a greater threat?
Japan or Germany?
Answer: Germany
Why?: We knew that Germany was
working on an atomic weapon, it was
important to defeat them before they
could do this.
Where should we send
US troops first?
Fight right now as much as we can in
the Pacific to stop Japan’s advance.
First big land invasion (with GB) will be
in North Africa
NO help for the SU now – maybe later
Plan an invasion of western Europe for
1943 or 1944.
Status of the war in
1942
Germany controls most of Europe
including parts of the SU
Japan has conquered much of the
Pacific – and is threatening Australia
As 1942 begins, the Allies are in a
defensive position everywhere.
Who’s winning when?
Early 1942 – Avis winning everywhere
Mid 1942 – Japanese advance in Pacific
stopped at Midway
1943 – the tide has turned – Allies are
pushing back
1944 – Allies winning everywhere – Axis in
retreat
1945 – Allies “finishing off” the Axis powers
