FDR & Churchill meet, Allies respond by using:
Convoys to protect ships from Wolfpack
Use radar to spot the Wolfpack and sink them
Soviets join the Allies

Summer 1942: Hitler invades Soviet Union, Germans want access
to oil & to the Volga River,

Nov 1942: Stalin has troops surround city of Stalingrad, cuts off
supplies to city, Germans surrender
Result: Although Soviets don’t fight w/ Allies, they make it easier for
them in the North Africa, Italy and France
Operation Torch in North Africa
1. 1941-1942: British Army (Montgomery) & German Afrika Corps
(Rommel) locked into a back and forth battle in N. Africa
2. Oct1942: Monty launches an attack at El Alamein, Egypt
3. Nov 1942: US Gen. Eisenhower’s troops land in Morocco, starting
Operation Torch
Result: May 1943: “Desert Fox” Erwin Rommel is sandwiched between
Monty and Eisenhower and his German Afrika Corps are defeated
Italian Campaign
• FDR & Churchill meet in Casablanca, discuss invasions of Italy &
France – Churchill thinks they should attack Italy first
• Led by General George Patton, Allies capture Sicily in Summer of
1943, Mussolini arrested by King
•Hitler sends troops into Italy,
Mussolini rescued
•Italy taking longer than expected,
allies must pull out troops to begin
invasion of France
•Allies finally win in Italy by
early 1945
