Europe & North Africa
• The war in early 1942 was going very
badly for the Allies
• The Nazi’s had gained control of France in
the west and were still advancing into the
Soviet Union
• However, Hitler underestimated the
Russian winter and his men were not
prepared for it
• The Germans lost in Stalingrad in mid1942 and from there the Soviets pushed the
Germans back west
• A few months later German leader Erwin
Rommel began to lose the battle to the
British in Africa (El Alamein)
• With American forces led by Dwight
Eisenhower landing in Northern Africa in
November, the German forces were pinned
down and forced to surrender in 1943

camp
Many died along the way from starvation,
disease, or violence inflicted on them
In May 1942 American forces began to
halt the Japanese advance at the Coral Sea
and dealt them a huge blow at Midway the
next month by sinking 4 aircraft carriers,
322 aircraft, and reducing Japan’s supply
of highly trained pilots
