• Science has enormous influence on our
lives. It provides the basis of much of
modern technology---- the tools, materials,
technique, and sources of power that
make our lives and work easier. The term
applied Science is sometimes used to refer
to scientific research that concentrates on
the development of technology.
• Cells are the basic units of structure and
function in living things. For example, just
as bricks are the building blocks of a house
or school, cells are the building blocks of
life. Since you are alive, you are made of
cells, too. Look closely at the skin on your
arm. No matter how hard you look with
your eyes alone, you won’t be able to see
individual skin cells.
• Since an animal cell
does not have a cell
wall, the cell
membrane forms a
barrier between the
cytoplasm and the
environment outside
the cell.
• Most of the cell’s
energy is produced
within these rodshaped organelles.
• The cytoplasm is the
area between the cell
membrane and the
nucleus. It contains a
gel-like fluid in which
many different or
organelles are found.
• The Golgi bodies
receive materials from
the endoplasmic
retiiculum and send
them to other parts of
the cell. They also
release materials
outside the cell.
• Some animals cells
have vacuoles that
store food, water,
wastes, and other
materials.
• These small structures
function as factories to
produce proteins.
• As you sail farther into
the cytoplasm, you
find yourself in a maze
of passageways called
the endoplasmic
reticulum. These
passgeways carry
proteins and other
materials from one
part of the cell to
another.
• Almost all animal cells
contain a nucleus.The
nucleus directs all of
the activities,
including reprouction.
• These small organelles
found in many animal
cells contain
chemicals that break
down food particles
and worn - out cell
parts.
