Bellwork
1. Where does blood become oxygenated?
2. Which side of the heart contains the
oxygenated blood?
TOD Answers 9.1
• The right side of the heart pumps blood to the
lungs. Here it absorbs oxygen and is now
called oxygenated blood.
• The gas carbon dioxide is removed from the
blood into the lungs. The blood returns to the
left side of the heart and from here it is pumped
to the body tissues where it gives up it’s
oxygen and it’s now called deoxygenated
blood. It passes back to the right side of the
heart through veins.
1. What does double circulation mean.
2. Explain the following statements….
a. Blood on the right side of the heart is at
_____ pressure.
b. Blood on the left side of the heart is at ____
pressure.
c. Oxygenated blood from the lungs is at ____
pressure.
d. Veins contain ____ _____ valves.
And the answer is…
1. Blood passes through the heart twice during one
circuit around the body.
2.
• a. low
• b. high
• c. low
• d. semi-lunar
The Main Players in Circulation
• The heart is the pump which circulates the
blood through the body.
• Lungs oxygenate blood and remove
carbon dioxide from the blood.
• Arteries carry blood away from the heart
• Veins carry blood to the heart
• Capillaries connect arteries and veins and
deliver oxygen to cells.
Basic Heart Design
4 chambers and many vessels
Right Side
(Blue)
The Septum
stops the
deoxygenated
blood from the
right side from
mixing with the
oxygenated
blood from the
left side.
Left Side
(Red)
Septum is a thick
wall of tissue
that separates
the two halves.
I here the beat of your heart…
• The atria contract at the same time left
and right atrium dump the blood into the
ventricles.
• The ventricles contract at the same time,
each pushing the blood out of the heart.
• Right to the _____
• Left to the ______ _______
Double Circulatory System

diffuses into the blood
Deoxygenated
blood is carried

Deoxygenated
