Present tense = what’s happening now
Today, we’re going to learn how to conjugate (or change) –ar verbs in
the present tense.
Every verb has a “base form” or infinitive form (el infinitivo)
• This means it has –ar, -er, or –ir for its “base” ending
• For example: estudiar, comer, vivir
Conjugation = changing a verb’s ending to match the person
Examples:
I am instead of I are
We run instead of We runs
Steps for changing –ar verbs in the present tense:
1) Drop the infinitive ending of the verb (-ar)
2) Add the appropriate ending:
yo (I) = -o
nosotros/as (we) = -amos
tú (you) = -as
vosotros/as (you all, Spain) = -áis
él, ella (he, she) = -a
ellos, ellas (they) = -an
usted (you) = -a
ustedes (you all) = -an
Example:
Estudiar looks like this:
yo estudio
tú estudias
él/ella/usted estudia
nosotros estudiamos
vosotros estudiáis
ellos/ellas/uds. estudian
*Note: All verbs will have 6 endings!
bailar = to dance
nadar = to swim
llevar = to wear/carry
cantar = to sing
trabajar = to work
patinar = to skate
