Single Celled
Organisms
Characteristics of Living
Things
Living things:
…are composed of cells
…have different levels of organization
…use energy
…respond to their environment
…grow
…reproduce
…adapt to their environment
Two Basic Types of Cells
Prokaryotes
Eukaryotes
No nucleus
Nucleus
DNA in cytoplasm
DNA in nucleus
Ex: All Bacteria
Ex: Protists, Fungi,
Plants and Animals
Single Celled and Multi-Cellular
Organisms are Eukaryotes
Single Celled (aka
protists):
–Organisms have
everything they need to
be self-sufficient
Multi-Cellular:
–Specialization increases
until some cells do only
certain things (ex. blood
cells)
Protists
Protists are eukaryotes and cannot be
classified as plants, animals or fungi, but act
similar to each.

The four main types that we will explore are:
Amoeba
Paramecium
Euglena
Volvox
How do Protists Eat/Get
Rid of Waste?
Exocytosis
