Lesson 8
What are Bacteria, Fungi, and
Protists Like?
Start Up
Get out your packet and
work on the supplemental
material.
Objectives
– Identify the major groups
of organisms that are not
classified as plants or
animals
– Describe the basic
characteristics of Protists
– Identify major groups of
protists
– Describe the basic
characteristics of fungi
– Identify major groups of
fungi
– Describe the basic
characteristics of bacteria
Bacteria
One-celled organisms without a nucleus
– Belong to Kingdom Monera
– Microscopic organisms
– Some decompose
– Can cause illness
Black Plague
Louis Pasteur
Demonstrated microorganisms caused
wine and milk to spoil
Invented pasteurization
– What is it?
Helpful Bacteria
Some recycle nitrogen
Help us digest foods
I’m a fungi!
Fungus- an organism that absorbs its food
from dead, dying, or living materials
– Includes yeasts, molds, and mushrooms
Yeast is one-celled and reproduces
dividing cells
Most fungus reproduce using spores
More Fungus
Most are decomposers
Few absorb nutrients from living tissues
Uses
– Eat mushrooms
– Yeast raises bread
– Mold is medicine
Protist
An organism that is not an animal, plant,
bacteria, or fungus
– Most are one-celled
– Have nucleus
– Some use photosynthesis
Protozoan
A Protist that has some characteristics of
animals
– Most live in water or moist places
Example: Amoebas
