Adolescent Vaccines
Influenza
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Meningitis (MCV4)
Tdap (Tetanus-Diphtheria-Pertussis)
2010 National Immunization
Survey-Teen
Increases in vaccination rates for HPV are
trailing increases in rates for Tdap & MenACWY
(MCV4).
Coverage for 1 dose of Tdap increased by 13
percentage points, reaching about 69%
– No differences by race/ethnicity
Coverage for 1 dose of MCV4 increased by 9
percentage points, reaching about 63%
– Coverage higher among Hispanics than among
whites (66.1% vs 61.2%)
2010 NIS Data
Coverage for 1 dose of HPV for girls
increased by only 4.4 percentage points to
about 49% (48.7 in 2010 vs 44.3% in 2009)
For girls who received the recommended 3
doses of HPV, coverage increased 5 points
to just 32% (32% in 2010 vs 26.7% in 2009)
Of the girls who began the HPV series, 30%
did not receive all 3 doses
2010 NIS Data Continued
Completion of the 3 dose HPV series was
lower among blacks and Hispanics than
whites
Coverage for 3 doses of HPV vaccine was
lower for those living below poverty
Poor and minority teens are less likely to
receive all 3 recommended doses of HPV

What are immunizations?
Immunizations are injections (under the
skin or via the nose) that protect against
dangerous diseases
How do they work?
Immunizations have weakened or killed versions
of bacteria or viruses
When they get in the body, they cause the body
to create antibodies – special proteins that fight
bacteria and viruses
They also create what’s called “Immunologic
Memory” – so the body remembers how it
fought off the weakened or killed versions and
uses it against live versions
Adolescent Immunizations
Start with Four
Influenza
HPV
Meningitis
Tdap: Lockjaw (Tetanus), Diphtheria,
Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
Influenza
Commonly called the flu
36,000 people die from influenza and its
complications each year
It is spread through respiratory droplets
(moisture in your breath) caused by coughing
and sneezing
Now recommended for every one 6 months and
older
There are now two ways to get immunized –
injection and nasal mist
HPV
Human Papillomavirus
HPV can cause:
certain forms of cervical and genital cancers in
women
genital cancers in men
genital warts in women and men
The first HPV Vaccine was developed for girls
ages 11-12 but some doctors are giving it as
early as age 9
A vaccine has been licensed, and is safe and
effective for males ages 9 through 26 years
HPV is a very common disease, 70% of sexually
active people will get HPV in their lives
There is a test for the virus that is usually done
during a Pap test for girls and women
Meningitis
Meningococcal disease
A special characteristic of meningitis is that you
have a rash with it
Meningitis is very deadly!! – It must be treated!
It is recommended that all teens 11-19 year old
get their immunization for meningitis
Teenagers aged 15- 19 are at increased risk
The disease is an infection of the fluids
surrounding the brain and spinal cord
David’s Story
Tdap
Tdap is an immunization that protects
teens from three diseases
Tetanus (lockjaw) – Causes tightening of
muscles and difficulty swallowing – often
get the disease through a puncture wound
or an opening into the body – Tetanus
cannot be passed person to person
Tdap
Diphtheria is a bacterial disease that Tdap
prevents
It affects the throat, nose and skin
Diphtheria has almost disappeared from
the U.S. because of immunizations
This immunization should be received
every 10 years
Tdap
Pertussis is another disease that Tdap protects
against
Whooping cough
It is passed to people by cough or sneeze or
touching an object that has the bacteria on it
The cough makes it difficult to breath and may
be life threatening to younger children and
babies
Teens and adults need to get a booster shot to
keep from getting pertussis when older
