The administration of vaccines requires a couple of legally defined acts,
prescription of the legend drug and administration of the drug to a
person. The administration of drugs is within the pharmacy practice
act. Occasionally the pharmacist receives a prescription from a prescriber
directing the pharmacist to administer a drug.
In Washington State a pharmacist can become a prescriber by an
agreement with a prescriber. The pharmacist's prescriptive
authority comes about as a result of "the initiating or modifying of drug
therapy in accordance with written guidelines or protocols by a practitioner
authorized to prescribe drugs" section of the pharmacy practice act. There
is a standard immunization agreement used by over 500 pharmacists and
practitioners. To participate the pharmacist must complete training based
upon the Center for Disease Control core immunization training and
become CPR certified. The access provided by pharmacists has improved
rates of vaccination.

• Washington’s rates do not meet our goals, and we take that very seriously.
• We’re concerned that outbreaks continue, many in unvaccinated kids.
• The vast majority of parents vaccinate their kids, and we thank them for
that. Some parents are anxious and some are delaying or deferring
vaccines.
• We understand why parents struggle with vaccine decisions.
• Parents want to do what’s best for their children.

Immunization rates in Washington hold steady
More work to do to prevent disease
OLYMPIA – After increasing slightly last year, childhood immunization rates in Washington remained
steady according to the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Immunization
Survey. These rates show that Washington continues to keep kids vaccinated and maintain the gains
made last year.
“Recent disease outbreaks in our state and around the country remind us how important childhood
immunizations are,” said Secretary of Health Mary Selecky. “We’ve got more work to do to make sure
kids in our state are protected against preventable diseases, all of which can be costly and have serious
side effects.”
“Immunization is one of the most important decisions parents can make to protect their child, their
families, and their communities,” said Secretary Selecky. “We want to make sure families have
accurate information about immunizations — that’s why we send them health information and work
closely with health care providers to make sure parents have the most up-to-date information.”
