Genetic Principles



Heredity – the passing of traits or
characteristics from one
generation to the next
Traits are controlled by genes.
Organisms inherit genes in pairs,
one from each parent.
Some genes are dominant, other are
recessive.
 Dominant genes hide (mask)
recessive genes.
 Some genes are neither dominant
nor recessive, but show
codominance or incomplete
dominance.


Some traits have more than two
forms of the allele, known as Multiple
alleles.

Other traits are controlled by more
than one gene – Polygenic traits
