Political History
• Until 1986 Taiwan was controlled by one party called
the Kuomintang (KMT)
– Chairman on the KMT was also Taiwan’s top leader and
was able to fill appointed positions and maintain political
control over Taiwan.
• Prior to the 1986 island-wide elections a group of
“nonpartisans” formed the Democratic Progressive
Party (DPP)
– In March 2000, DPP candidate Chen Shui-bian became the
first oppositional candidate to win the presidency.
U.S. Pushes Towards FTA
• China vs. Taiwan
– When China went communist,
2 million people left for Taiwan
and started a democratic regime.
• U.S. provides Patriot missile systems as part of a
$6.5 billion arms sale package to Taiwan.
– China claims Taiwan as a democratic island of its own.
– China has over 1000 missiles pointed at Taiwan.
