Public funerals held to honor the dead.
Democracy set up in Athens. Different type of democracy, but this is
where “rule by the people” begins.
In Ancient Greece, as in the U.S. today, everybody was equal before the
law
Commercial networks for trade all over the world was set up by the
Mycenaeans.
As food production and the economy drops, so does the population.
Homer wrote stories about Heroes. We have stories of heroes today
Polis- meaning center of focus is what “politics” is based on for us.

Citizens of Greece had rights and responsibilities. First form of Civics
Spartan men joined the army at age 20. U.S. has age restriction as well.
Sparta created a council that is much like our legislature.
Sparta discouraged the citizens from travel and the attainment of
new/different ideas. Several communist countries in the world in recent
times have held similar values.
12. In Athens, many citizens cried out for taking property/money from the
rich to be able to take care of the poor. Sound familiar?
13. Athens and Sparta, 2 completely different political entities did not
understand each other and therefore, did not like each other. We have
similar today with different political systems. The Cold War!

14. Civil War in Greece over differences in politics and Culture is very similar
to the causes of the American Civil War.
15. Greek Art became the foundation for all Western art, including ours
today.
16. Architecture- Many famous buildings in the U.S. have Greek architectural
themes.
17. Temples- They created temples where they would go and worship their
gods, not unlike our churches today that people go to worship their God.
18. Greek Drama is what we know as drama today. Plays that were held for
an audience.
19. The Socratic Method of teaching is still in use today

20. Plato believed men and women should have equal education and access to
all positions in society
21. “The Republic” by Plato was read and studied by many famous later
philosophers on government, including John Locke, Thomas Jefferson,
and Ben Franklin.
22. Plato established a school in Athens known as the Academy
23. The Olympic games was a way for the different city states to put aside
their differences and come together as greeks
24. Athenian Schools taught Reading, Writing, and Math.
25. Speeches like the one of Pericles to bolster the confidence of the country
in trying times are still given today.
