Greek Vocabulary
• Mycenaeans-Indo-European group who lived in Greece,
borrowed ideas from the Minoans
• Trojan War-In Greek Mythology, war against the city of Troy
by the Greeks(Paris of Troy took Helen, wife of Spartan
King)
• Dorians-Inhabited Greece after
the Mycenaeans
• Homer-author of Odyssey and Iliad, author of great epic
poems

• Epics-long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic
deeds and events that are important to the culture
• Myths-a legend, traditional story(mythology)
• Polis-city-state(Athens & Sparta)
• Acropolis- “high city”
• Monarchy-government where
one holds the authority/power
• Oligarchy-small group of people holding the
power(usually the elite)
• Tyrant-absoulte ruler, total power
• Democracy-Government by the people “elected
officials”
• Direct Democracy-Government in the direct
hands of the people
• Persian Wars-Conflict between the Greeks and
the Persians, who were looking to expand
• Classical Art-art from classical period, focus on
the human body, balance and order
• Tragedy-form of drama that involved human
suffering
• Comedy-form of drama made to make people
laugh
• Peloponnesian War-Greek war fought by Athens
and its allies(Delians) against the Peloponnesian
League led by Sparta.
• Philosophers-teach new ideas, get people to
think
• Socrates-Why?? Philosopher who questioned
everything
• Plato-student of Socrates, philosopher who wrote
many books about government
• Aristotle-philosopher, argued using the rules of
logic
• Macedonia-located in Northern Greece
• Alexander the Great-King of Macedonia, built
Greek Empire(Greece to India)
• Hellenistic Culture-blend/mix of Greek,
Perisan, Egyptian and Indian cultures
