The Respiratory System
This one is for Trevor!

Respiration
• Is a physical process by which living
organisms inhale oxygen from the
surrounding atmosphere and then exhale
carbon dioxide
Major Functions of the RS
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Provide oxygen to tissues and cells
Remove CO2 from the body
Body Temperature
Eliminating water
Aiding in voice production
Parts and Pieces
Upper Tract
A. Nostrils
B. Nasal cavity
C. Pharynx
Lower Tract
A. Larynx
B. Trachea
C. Bronchial tubes
D. Lungs
Muzzle
Made up of nose and lips
and varies greatly on
different animals
Horse is soft and with many
oil glands
Swine is very rigid with no
oil glands
Cattle and sheep have no oil
glands, but have sweat
glands
Cattle are considered
feverish if they have dry
muzzles!
Cross Section of IBR
Clinical Signs of IBR
Aborted Fetus due to IBR
Catarrhal Fever Clinical Signs
Oral Mucus Discharge
Rhinotracheitis in cat
You can see the turbinate
bones here
Atrophic Rhinitis in Swine
Separated from mouth by a hard and soft palate
Front is an extension of the nasal cavity
Back is connected to the pharynx
Lines with cells that produce mucus to coat
epithelial cells and membranes
Nasal
Cavity
Sinuses
Air-filled cavities in the bones of an animal’s
forehead
1. Maxillary
2. Frontal
3. Sphenoidal
4. Palatine
5. Lacrimal
Calf
Human Sinuses
Sinus Cavity
Pharnyx
• A short, funnel-shaped tube that transports
air into the larynx
• Common passage way for food and air, but
cannot pass through at the same time b/c of
the epiglottis
Epiglottis
Larynx
• Also called the “voice box”
• Prevents inhale foreign objects
into the lungs
• Cattle and horse have 5 large
cartilage structures
• The thyroid cartilage is known
as the Adam’s Apple
Vocal Cords
Larnyx
Trachea (Windpipe)
Consists of a series of adjacent cartilage rings
Prevents collapse of the trachea
Trachea
Enters the chest cavity as a single tube
Extends to the base of the heart and divides
into two branches called primary bronchi.
Each one goes into a lung
Bronchi
Each one then branches into Bronchioles
Dead-end into tiny air sacs called alveoli
Alveoli are the smallest and final air
passageways of the respiratory system
Right tracheal bronchus
Alveoli
Diffusion
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide
between the bloodstream and body cells is
accomplished.
