Diabetes
What is diabetes?
• Endocrine disorder
• pancreas
• produces little to no insulin
• or inappropriate response
• body loses main source of energy
• cannot access it
What does insulin do?
• Aids in the digestive process
• Helps make glucose enter the cells
• Deficiency=cells don’t get their food
• extra glucose can leave from body,
unused
How Diabetes Works
Common Types of
Diabetes
• Type 1 Diabetes
• from birth
• Type 2 Diabetes
• acquired
• Gestational Diabetes
• pregnancy
What is Type 1 Diabetes?
• Autoimmune
• body attacks itself and attacks pancreas
• pancreas beta cells produce insulin
• attacked by immune system
What causes Type 1
Diabetes?
• Scientists believe the following may trigger the
autoimmune response
• genetic factors
• environmental factors
• viruses
What causes Type 2
Diabetes?
• Older age, Obesity, Family history, 80% are
overweight
• Enough insulin produced, body is using it
ineffectively
• Insulin resistance
• Gradual development
What causes Gestational
Diabetes?
• Develops during late stages of pregnancy
• Usually disappears after the baby is born
• 40-60% higher chance of developing type 2
diabetes in 5-10 years
• Is caused by hormonal shortage of insulin
Treatment Methods for
Diabetes
• THERE IS NO CURE
• Preventative measures only work to extend
the life of the patient
• Blood pressure/cholesterol control
• Check BGL (Blood Glucose Levels)
• Education
More Treatment
• Foot care
• Regular exercise (keep weight down)
• Medication/use of insulin
Islet Cell Transplant
• For Type 1 Diabetes
• Cells from donor go in patient’s pancreas
• Help restore insulin producing beta cells
Acromegaly
Acromegaly
• Caused by excess increase in hormone
secretion
• benign tumor
• results in differences in facial appearance or
skin differences
• can result in heart disease, hypertension,
diabetes, and high risk for colon cancer
Symptoms
• Large feet, hands, and head
• Carpel tunnel syndrome
• Arthritis
• Oily Skin
• Vision Trouble
• Headaches
Treatment
• Surgical removal
• Possible radiation therapy to control hormone
levels further
Hirsutism
Hirsutism
• Caused by excess of androgens and
testosterone in women
• Polycystic ovary syndrome: imbalance of
sex hormones
• Causes unwanted “male-pattern” hair growth
Symptoms
• Coarse and pigmented body hair on face,
chest, and back
• Deepening voice
• Acne
• Decreased breast size
• Increased muscle mass
Treatment
• Electrolysis
• shock the hair follicles to damage and
destroy them
• Laser therapy
• uses focused light to disable hair follicles
and stop them from growing
