1st official battle of the Civil War

CSA refers to the Confederate States of
America, the name the south gave their
new country when they seceded from the
USA.
 Jefferson Davis was elected president of
the new Confederate States of America.


 Compared to the snake that slowly
strangles its prey to death.



Anaconda Plan
States that allowed slavery, but did not
secede from the Union.
 Deleware, Kentucky, Missouri, and
Maryland
 Lincoln could not afford to lose these
states to the Confederacy.

Border States
Commander of the Army of Northern
Virginia.
 Formerly one of the best senior officers in
the US army.
 Offered command of the US army, but
declined, feeling loyalty to his home state
of Virginia.


1st bloodshed of the Civil War
 Occurred at Manassas Junction in VA, only
25 miles South of Washington DC
 With the help of “Stonewall” Jackson’s
reinforcements, the Union suffered a
defeat.

1st Bull Run/ Manassas
Union General
 His successes in the West led Lincoln to
eventually name Grant commander of the
Union army in 1864.

Ulysses S. Grant
Gave Lincoln the victory he needed for
Emancipation Proclamation.
 Bloodiest single day of the Civil War.

Antietam

A decree freeing all enslaved persons in
states still in rebellion after January 1,
1863
Emancipation Proclamation

1863 siege that gave the Union control of
the Mississippi river.
Vicksburg

Cutting off an opponent’s food and
supplies and constantly bombarding it
until the enemy gives up.
Siege
Turning point of the war in the East.
 3-day battle/ Gettysburg, PA
 Union victory…Lee loses more than 1/3 of
his forces and will never be able to regain the strength he had before the
battle.
 Bloodiest battle of the Civil War

Gettysburg
Speech given by President Lincoln at the
dedication of a battlefield cemetery.
Becomes one of the best-known orations
in American History.

Gettysburg Address
Union troops march east across GA, led
by General Sherman.
 Purpose: to make Southern civilians
understand the horrors of war.
 Cuts a path of destruction through GA (at
times 60 miles wide), butning corps,
ransaking houses and killing livestock.
 Example of TOTAL WAR!!

Sherman’s March (to the sea)

Type of war in which one side utilizes all
its resources to completely destroy its
opponent.
Total War

The most prominent Civil War nurse.
Clara Barton
Village 3 miles east of Appomattox, VA
 Site of Lee’s surrender to Grant on April 9,
1865

Appomattox Courthouse
Just after 10pm on April 14, 1865 Lincoln
is shot in the back of the head by John
Wilkes Booth. He dies the next morning.
 This occurs at a play at Ford’s Theater.

Lincoln’s Assassination
Constitutional amendment banning
slavery in the United States.
