Abraham Lincoln
• President of United States
during the War
• A Republican (this was a
NEW political party at the
time)
• Republicans believed in
restricting the spread of
slavery to new territory
• MAIN GOAL: Hold the
Union (the U.S.) together
above anything else
Jefferson Davis
• U.S. Senator who became the
President of the Confederacy
(CSA)
• From Mississippi but…
• Resided in Virginia at the CSA
capital of Richmond during the
War
• He was captured by the Union and
imprisoned for 2 years after the
war
Ulysses S. Grant
• Union (or Northern)
military commander
• He won major battle
victories in the South while
other Union commanders
were failing in the North
• He ultimately became the
supreme leader of the
Union Army and was
leader at the time Robert
E. Lee surrendered.
Robert E. Lee
• Virginian (above anything
else)
• Confederate leader of the
“Army of Northern Virginia”
(the Confederate army)
• He was beloved by his
soldiers even as the
Confederate army began to
fail
• He opposed secession but
could not turn his back on his
home of Virginia
• Accepted defeat at

• Educated himself
• He urged Lincoln to
recruit former slaves and
African Americans to
fight in the Union army
• Famous Abolitionist
