Abraham Lincoln replaced McClellan with Ambrose
Burnside as General but Burnside led 12,600 troops to
their death at Fredericksburg
John Hooker replaced Burnside as General but he was
defeated at Chancellorsville by Lee with half as many
troops
Stonewall Jackson would be killed after the battle but
Lee would plan to invade the North again to force
peace talks and gain European Support

As Lee crossed into Philadelphia, the Three day Battle of
Gettysburg would begin with 90,000 union Troops and 75,000
Confederates
As Both Sides tried to hold position Lee ordered 13,000 troops to
storm the middle of the union line
After Pickett’s Charge Lee would lead his men in retreat but the
North would not Finish him off
The North Lost 23,000 men in the Battle with the South Losing
28,000 men as Lincoln looked for a man to defeat Lee

Ulysses S. Grant defeated the South at the Siege of
Vicksburg after opening up the Mississippi River to
the North
Grant would Surround Vicksburg to Starve out the
Soldiers who would surrender fulfilling the Anaconda
Plan
With the South Split in two the union had an
advantage in the War and Lincoln would place Grant
in a position to defeat Lee

As Grant went after Lee in Virginia, William Tecumseh Sherman
would push through Atlanta to the Atlantic Coast
Sherman would wage Total War, destroying everything in his path
leading to Atlanta
Sherman’s Victory in Atlanta would be a Boost to the Union but
also lead to the Reelection of Lincoln as President
Sherman Brought hope to a quick end to the war and delivered
Lincoln Savannah on the Georgia Coast
Total Control
After Sherman’s Victory in Georgia he would march North to meet
Grant in Virginia where he had been fighting a Brutal War
Grant Would lose 17,000 men in the Battle of the Wilderness but
would not retreat
The war would continue in Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor where
7,000 of Grant’s troops would die fighting
The war would settle in at Petersburg and lead to 10 months of
fighting
Grant would have Richmond surrounded and Lee would retreat and
at 8pm on April 3rd, the union would Control Richmond
Mission Accomplished
Though Lee wanted to keep fighting, he knew
there was no hope and would Surrender on
April 9th, 1865 at Appomattox Court House
Grant offered up a Generous Surrender, letting
the Southern Troops march home in peace
After 4 long years of Fighting the Civil War
would be over
