Union Victories at Gettysburg and
Vicksburg











Since General Lee had won at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville,
he gained confidence to go and attack the North again
In all the confusion, Confederate guards accidentally killed Stonewall
Jackson
Lee headed North, where he met with troops in Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1, 1863
Union had 90,000 troops and Confederates had 75,000
Union struggled to stay on Cemetery Ridge, while Confederates
tried to dislodge, or remove them
George Pickett decided to attack on the Union’s line with 15,000
troops
It was called Pickett’s Charge
It failed, causing Confederates to retreat
Union failed to follow and destroy Lee’s army, which angered Lincoln
South never recovered from Gettysburg

On July 4, 1863, Union received news that Confederate troops had
surrendered to Grant in Vicksburg
Grant attacked in the Siege of Vicksburg
Grants troops surrounded the city and blocked the delivery of
food and supplies
The Union finally had accomplished a huge point in the Anaconda
Plan
South was split into two

The Unions plan was o have Grant take on Lee’s armies while William
Tecumseh Sherman went into the South
In September 1864, Sherman took Atlanta
His victory affected the election, because Lincoln won again
On November, 1864, Sherman burnt Atlanta and set out on a long
march
Sherman’s March to Sea destroyed Georgia
Over 19,000 slaves were able to escape plantations
In Virginia, both Grant and Lee used strategy to destroy Lee’s armies
At the Battle of Wilderness in May 1864, Grant had over 17,000
casualties
At Cold Harbor, Grant had 7,000 casualties
In June 1864, Grant went for a long nine month siege fro Richmond
The Confederacy Falls







Lee warned all the Confederates in Richmond about Grant’s armies
On April 2, 1865, Confederates fled Richmond and set flames so
that Grant couldn’t use their supplies
Lee fled West with Grant following
When Lee had enough, he sent a letter to Grant saying that he
surrendered
On April 9, 1865, Lee and Grant met at Appomattox Court House
It is here that Lee surrendered
The Civil War was ending
