Railroad was a
system of
secret routes
that led slaves
to the North
to be free
Underground Railroad Routes
In 1860, Abraham Lincoln
was elected President. He
believed the government
should prevent slavery from
spreading to new states.
Southern states were against
the election of Lincoln, and
seceded from the United
States.
The Southern states that
seceded formed the
Confederate States of
America, also known as the
Confederacy.
The states that remained in
the United States were
known as the Union.
The Civil War began on April 12, 1861 when
Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in
South Carolina
In 1863, President Lincoln issued the
Emancipation Proclamation
◦ This stated that all enslaved people in the
Confederacy would be “forever free.”
◦ It also allowed African Americans to join the Union
forces
Confederate General Robert
E. Lee marched his troops
into Pennsylvania to meet
the Union at Gettysburg
General George Mead of PA,
commanded the Union
Troops
The government created a
cemetery at Gettysburg for
all the Union soldiers that
died in the battle.
Lincoln’s dedication speech
became known as the
Gettysburg Address
The battle at Gettysburg
lasted 3 days and more than
50, 000 troops were killed or
wounded
The Union won the battle of
Gettysburg and Lee withdrew
his troops
Pennsylvanians supported the Union by
using their natural resources to produce
weapons, such as cannons.
Women sewed uniforms and nursed
wounded soldiers.
About 9,000 African Americans from
Pennsylvania enlisted in the Union Army
Supporting the Troops
The Mason-Dixon Line was a boundary between
Pennsylvania (North) and Maryland (South)
General Ulysses S. Grant was in charge of the
Union troops
The Union controlled most of the Mississippi
Valley and Georgia
The Union’s win at the battle at Cedar Creek
severely weakened the Confederate forces
The Civil War Ends
After the Union captured the Confederate capital
in Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee
surrendered at Appomattox, Virginia on April 9,
1865.
This ended the Civil War.
More Americans died in the Civil War than in any
other war.
Five days later President Abraham Lincoln was
assassinated.
