Autumn 2 2016
Dear Parents
Welcome back to our second term in Year
6. The children have had a brilliant start
to the year and have impressed us all
with their mature, resilient and confident
attitudes. Many of the children are
displaying a very purposeful and
determined attitude to learning and are
keen to take on board all advice on how to
improve. This is fantastic! Well done Y6!
This term we have an exciting topic
planned and we are sure the children will
enjoy it just as much as their survival
topic.
Kind regards
The Year 6 Team
Maths
We will be learning written methods for multiplication and division
and then spending time problem solving using the 4 operations
including unpicking and solving longer worded problems and
investigations.
Art
We will begin our art lessons by learning about and producing our
own propaganda posters. Following this, we will be making a
number of products (including tea towels and baubles) to sell at
our stall at the Christmas Fayre to raise money for Avon Tyrrell.
WEBSITE
We are regularly updating our school website with
information including the weekly homework and spellings.
Please see our year group pages (Teaching and learning/all
year groups/year 6) for more information about what we
are up to in school.
Copies of letters that have been sent out are also
available on our school website (News/Letters home/year
6).
Topic
Our topic lessons will all be based around WW1. We will learn
about the countries involved, the alliances that were formed and
the effects of war on men, women and children.
Science
Science will be taught over a number of Science days during which
we will learn about the advances in medical science due to wartime
events.
Year 6 Autumn 2 2016
WW1: War, What is it good for?
English
In our reading sessions we will be focusing on the skill of inference
(using clues from the text to understand the author’s meaning) and
we will be paying close attention to the way that questions are
worded to ensure we understand how to respond.
We will also be writing letters in role to show our understanding of
the war and will be writing Biographies of WW1 poets.
PE
Our outdoor team game PE sessions will continue to be taught by Team Spirit on Tuesday afternoons and we
will be learning tem work skills in PE on a Friday afternoon. As the weather continues to get colder, please
ensure that your child has long trousers and a jumper in their PE kit.
SATS!
As you are aware, your child will be completing their SATs
tests in May 2017. SATs week is 8th – 12th May and all
children will complete their tests during this week so it is
very important that they are in school.
We would like to invite you in to school to learn more about
these tests and look at examples on Monday 21st November.
There will be two meetings on this night, one starting at 3.30
and one starting at 5.30. We hope that lots of parents will
be able to come but if you are unavailable that evening.
Please speak to the Year 6 teachers and we will be able to
give you all of the information at your convenience.
