The War at Home

Congress Gives Power to
Wilson
War Industries Board- Main regulatory body
created by President Wilson. It was
established in 1917, headed by Bernard M.
Baruch. The WIB encouraged companies to
use mass-production techniques to increase
efficiency.
Selling the War
Propaganda- biased communication
designed to influence people’s thoughts and
actions.
George Creel- Former muckraking journalist
who headed the Committee on Public
Information (CPI). This was the nation’s first
propaganda agency.
Attacks on Civil Liberties
Increase
Espionage and Sedition Acts- Under these
acts a person could be fined up to $10,000
and sentenced to 20 years in jail for
interfering with the war effort or for saying
anything disloyal, profane, or abusive about
the government or the war effort.
The War Encourages Social
Change
Great Migration- large-scale movement of
hundreds of thousands of Southern blacks to
cities in the North.
