Transcript Mapping the Novel to Motion and the Physics of Change

Motion and the Physics of
Change
• The Potential Energy of a choice waiting to be made
(questions, experiences, possibilities…)
• The Kinetic Energy of a life lived by those choices
(discoveries made, transformations, etc…)
• The Velocity at which a life moves (Where did it start?
Where is it headed? How fast is it going?)
• How Newton’s 1st Law of Motion not only affects us
physically, but also emotionally and mentally (What moves
people? What gets in our way? What does it take to change?)
“POTENTIAL ENERGY”
This is energy that is stored…that has the
possibility of being used. You can think of this
as something ‘waiting’ to happen because of
what or where it is…
• What are the possibilities presented to the
characters?
• What choices need to be made? Why?
• What difference will they make in their
lives?
“KINETIC ENERGY”
Kinetic Energy is the energy of
something in motion. You can think
about this as something happening...
• What choices ARE made?
• What affect do they/will they have?
• What does or will change?
“VELOCITY”
Velocity is the speed and direction that
something is moving. You can think about
this in terms of someone’s life: Where are
they headed? Where did they start from?
How fast are they going there?
• Where have they been?
• Where are the characters headed now?
• How fast are they heading there?
“Newton’s 1st Law of Motion”
Newton’s 1st Law of Motion is about
resistance to change. You can express this
by saying that ‘an object at rest tends to stay
at rest and an object in motion tends to stay
in motion unless acted upon by another
force’. You can think about this in terms of
how people feel and think, as well as how
they act.
• What are the characters thinking and feeling
about their lives right now? Why?
• What are they resisting? What is in their way?
• What will it/does it take for them to change?
