Newton’s
Law of
Motion
An object in motion stays in motion and an object at
rest stays at rest unless acted upon by a net force.

Inertia
 Tendency of an object to resist change in
motion
 Measured by mass
Think about examples in space, where there
is no force of friction or gravity…
Force is not needed for velocity
to exist.
Force is needed to change a
velocity.
Having a velocity is “FREE”,
changing a velocity “costs”
force.
How are these examples
of Newton’s 1st law?
 Shaking ketchup out of a bottle…
You get the ketchup and bottle moving,
then your hand applies a force that stops
the bottle but no force pulls back on the
ketchup so it keeps going.
 Riding on a skateboard and hitting a curb…
You and the skateboard are moving, the
curb applies a force to stop the
skateboard but none on you so you keep
going forward.
