Methods of
Persuasion
Emotional Appeal
 Emotional Appeals
use emotions such
as anger, fear, and
pity to convince.
Emotional Appeals – Morals
 Emotional appeals

moral attitudes
about right and
wrong, good and
evil, in order to
convince.

Rhetorical Questions
When Sojourner Truth

women’s rights, she
compared her
strength to that of
men, and asked,
“Ain’t I a woman?”
Emotional Appeal - Allusion
 A hint at something that most people
are familiar with.
 For example, this
picture alludes to
Adam & Eve’s
apple.
Logical Appeals - Facts
 Logical Appeals use
facts and reasoning –
sometimes false logic to convince others.
 This poster argued that
the care of each
"undesirable" cost the
"undue burden" of
60,000 marks of
German taxpayer
money over the
patient's lifetime, and
that there was a better
- indeed, a "final" solution to the difficulty.
Logical Appeal –
Anecdotes
Anecdote – a
short account of
an incident.
Anecdotes are
used as examples
to support an
opinion, or as
stories that
appeal to our
emotions.
Scenario
 An imaginary story used to prove a point.
 Example:
If you were walking down the street and
saw someone harassing a child, would
you just walk by and look the other way?
Logical Appeal – Expert Opinion
Expert Opinion – using quotes from
knowledgeable sources for support.
Logical Appeal - Case Studies
Case Study – a careful study of an individual
or group situation that reveals what factors
led to a particular success or failure.
