A NEW KIND OF WAR
• 1914 – there had not been a
major war in Europe for fifty
years
NEW WEAPONS
• Bolt-action rifles meant soldiers
could fire 15 rounds per minute
and hit targets at 1,400 yards
NEW WEAPONS
• Machine guns (could shoot 400
rounds per minute)
• The Germans killed approx.
15,000 French troops per day in
early battle
NEW WEAPONS
• Tanks – developed in the U.S.
and first used by the British

• Airplanes – WWI saw the use of
the airplane as a viable weapon

THE RED BARON
• Joined the German Airforce at 23 and is
credited with 80 combat victories
• He was shot down/killed by a Canadian
pilot on 21 April 1918

mustard gas
• Germans were the first to use
gas in 1915
Gas targeted the lungs
Internal & external bleeding
Could take up to
5 weeks to die
