THE CIVIL WAR WAS FOUGHT BETWEEN 1861 AND 1865 AND
LASTED 5 YEARS

THE CIVIL WAR OFFICIALLY BEGAN ON APRIL 12, 1861 WHEN
CONFEDERATE FORCES BOMBARDED THE UNION CONTROLLED

During the war, a variety of weapons were used on both
sides. These weapons include edged weapons such as
knives and swords, firearms such as, rifled-muskets,
breech loaders and repeating weapons, various field
guns such as artillery, and new weapons such as the
early grenade and machine gun.

1.Hardtack and coffee were the staples, in addition to
salt pork, corn meal and whatever
fruits, vegetables and berries could be collected on the
march. Many Confederate soldiers were in a state of
near-starvation by the war's end.
Over the course of the Civil War, approximately three
million men (and a handful of women disguised as men)
served in the armed forces. By comparison, before the
war, the U.S. Army consisted of only about 16,000
soldiers. The mobilization that took place over the four
years of the war touched almost every extended family

The union uniform consisted of a dark
blue wool coat with light blue trousers and
a dark cap called a forage cap. They
typically wore shoes that went up to their
ankles called "brogans".
The coat often had bright buttons that
sometimes indicated the rank of the
soldier or what state they represented.
Other markings on the coat like piping or
badges usually indicated the rank of the
soldier.
THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN SECTIONS OF THE UNITED
STATES DEVELOPED ALONG DIFFERENT LINES. THE SOUTH
REMAINED A PREDOMINANTLY AGRARIAN ECONOMY WHILE THE
NORTH BECAME MORE AND MORE INDUSTRIALIZED. DIFFERENT
SOCIAL CULTURES AND POLITICAL BELIEFS DEVELOPED. ALL OF
THIS LED TO DISAGREEMENTS ON ISSUES SUCH AS TAXES,
TARIFFS AND INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS AS WELL AS STATES
RIGHTS VERSUS FEDERAL RIGHTS
BETWEEN 1642 AND 1646 ENGLAND WAS TORN APART
BY A BLOODY CIVIL WAR. ON THE ONE HAND STOOD THE
SUPPORTERS OF KING CHARLES I: THE ROYALISTS. ON
THE OTHER STOOD THE SUPPORTERS OF THE RIGHTS
AND PRIVILEGES OF PARLIAMENT: THE
PARLIAMENTARIANS.

The most often cited official date of the end of the civil war
is April 9, 1865 when General Robert E Lee surrendered the
Army of Northern Virginia at the McLean House in the
village of Appomattox Court House. There were battles and
skirmishes after this date, but this is generally considered
the official end of the civil war.
